Thankful for Roses and Thorns

The Upward Look, by Jon Forrest

Thankful for Roses and Thorns

....the taxes I pay ....because it means I’m employed.

....the clothes that fit a little too snug ....because it means I have enough to eat.

....my shadow who watches me work ....because it means I am out in the sunshine.

....a lawn that needs mowing, windows that need cleaning and

gutters that need fixing ....because it means I have a home.

....the spot I find at the far end of the parking lot ....because it means I am capable of walking.

....my huge heating bill ....because it means I am warm.

....all the complaining I hear about our government ....because it means we have freedom of speech.

....the lady behind me in church who sings off key. ....because it means that I can hear.

....the piles of laundry and ironing ....because it means my loved ones are nearby.

....the alarm that goes off in the early morning hours ....because it means that I’m alive.

....weariness and aching muscles at the end of the day ....because it means I have been productive.

The Apostle Paul told us to give thanks in all things. See 1 Thessalonians 5:18. But, not all things are easily appreciated. The problem we have is that the verse we quoted from ends with the words, “for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Doing God’s will can be hard. However, the benefits that come from doing even the hard things are beyond our wildest imaginations. It is always God’s will for us to be thankful to him, no matter what comes our way. He never promised life would be all flowers. Even roses come with more thorns than blooms. However, the roses make the thorns worth the trouble.

This Thanksgiving try to overlook the thorns of life and smell the roses. It will be well worth the pain.

I am excited about the family Sunday coming up this weekend. The kids will once again take part in helping to lead the service and Josh will bring another exciting message from God’s Word. You won’t want to miss one second.

Thankful to God with and for you,

Jon
