The Upward Look, by Jon Forrest

Life or Death Culture

You may recall that when Israel moved into the Promise Land of Canaan, the Lord commanded them to conquer the land completely. They were ordered to wipe out the population of each city. This sounds brutal, but there was a spiritual reason. The Lord knew that the influence of these cultures and their false gods would infiltrate the minds of his people and eventually draw them away. You must realize that the worship practices of such false gods were humanistic and fleshly. They played to the lustful side of people which could draw them into sinful behavior and spiritual destruction.

They were warned in the early parts of their journey from Egypt of the spiritually catastrophic dangers of accepting the draw of these sinful practices. Look at Deuteronomy 18:9-13… When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord; because of these same detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord your God.

Most of us can see the problem with sacrificing children in the fire, although we still have people in our world who think that sacrificing unborn children through injecting them with substances that will chemically do the same thing to the “so called” fetus burning them up or brutally dismembering them by ripping them apart while still in the womb all because the child is unwanted by his parents.

It is interesting to see, that the practice of offering a child to a false god by casting them into the fire as a sacrifice is closely linked to the false worship of the evil spirit world. It is demonic to offer a child as a sacrifice to any god, including the god of convenience or self-desire. Abortion is a demonic sacrifice to worldly false gods.

Many followers of Christ would claim that they would never worship Satan or his forces. However, many are drawn to what they call entertainment to observe or even utilize the services of a medium or transference mystic who claims to assist in communicating with the dead. The powers they seem to display are often utilized for entertainment or to help people to get advice or complete unfinished business with family members or friends who have died. Just like the passage in 1 Samuel 28 where King Saul, who knew better than anyone that it was sinful, asked a witch (medium) to bring back the prophet Samuel from the dead so that he could consult him for guidance. While it appears that Samuel talked with him, it is likely that what Saul saw and talked with was an evil spirit serving as an imposter.

When I was a teen, I had the opportunity several times to hear a man named Ben Alexander speak on this subject. Before he became a follower of Christ, Ben had been a Trance Medium. He would go into a self-induced trance and attempt to communicate with the dead. However, Ben said that he never talked to the dead. He would communicate with spirits that would imitate the dead people he was trying to meet. He said that this is the deception of Satan. Ben continued his ministry “ESP (Exposing Satan’s Power) Ministries until his death a year or two ago at the age of 94.

Ben warned us against dabbling with the spirit world. He said that while some people did it just for fun, casting spells, séances, Ouija boards, tarot cards, fortune tellers, and such were doorways to becoming trapped in the occult.

While Jesus never told us to destroy the lives of people in pagan cultures, he did warn against trying to worship two gods. The New Testament warns us to put to death the old self and follow the risen Savior. We must reject to culture of this world and embrace Jesus Christ as our master and guide. In fact when we accept his call to salvation and a new life, we should put him on like a garment and seek to be like him.

While we are living in the world, we must never allow ourselves to be of (or like) the world. God has called you heavenward to an eternal relationship with him. The world of the occult is a lie. It is real, but it offers false hope. Jesus offers eternal life. The occult offers destruction and eternal death. The occult has power, but it can only imitate the superior power of God.

God’s power is the real deal.

Jesus has offered it to you and to me if we will only trust him.

This Sunday we will resume our weekly series of messages called When God Build’s a King How a lowly shepherd became a great King with a message titled Finish Well based on 1 Samuel 28:3-25. I hope you will be with us for this life changing teaching from God’s Word.
