HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Updated: Jan 3, 2019
We are beginning a new year. The future can look daunting at times. Looking back at the last year, I wonder what this year holds for my family and I. The good news, we don’t have to worry.
Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. ... (Mt. 6:25-34)
I have decided to live my life in faith. This means I look for opportunities presented to me and follow where those opportunities lead. I believe those opportunities will never end, if I am living in righteousness. They are directed by God and blessed as I pursue them.
I use the phrase “living in righteousness” to mean Godly character or a bearer of spiritual fruit. Paul tells us what that spiritual fruit looks like, “Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).”
Under the ‘old law’ our righteousness was found in following the law given to Moses. Under the grace of Christ, we find righteousness in Christ’s sacrifice and live it out through our fruit. The fruit of the spirit is the evidence of remaining in Christ. Just as a vine bears fruit when it remains in the branches, so we bear fruit when we remain in Christ.
Remaining in Christ is committing ourselves to the teachings of Jesus. Many of these teachings can be found in Jesus’ ‘Sermon on the Mount’ found in Matthew chapters 5-7. The rest of the New Testament books are collections of eye witness accounts and the apostle’s commentary and further revelation on Christ’s teaching. All these writings from scripture enhance our lives.
Looking into the future, I strive to see the blessings God has in store for me and others. It isn’t all about my blessings, but also the blessings I may give to others. This ‘renewed vision’ comes from our understanding granted to us through the teachings of Jesus.
May you have a blessed 2019
May you see the opportunities before you
May you bless others
May you have a Happy New Year!
In His service and yours,
